Your Swiss Experience

On this 8 Day / 7 Night tour, we immerse ourselves in the crisp mountain air of the Alps. Think fondue, alphorns, and cows wearing bells as they munch on green grass in high meadows. Pack your walking shoes as you are in for an adventure! Our tour is based in the Lauterbrunnen valley, famed for its seventy-two (72!) waterfalls and Tolkien’s inspiration for Rivendell in Lord of the Rings. Our accommodations for the week are modern condominiums in the heart of the valley where you will have all the comforts of home, including your own private kitchen.

Settle in under the watchful shadow of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountain peaks while the rush of streams and waterways calms the soul. In true Hub & Spoke style, we will venture out on daily excursions to discover the delights of this corner of Switzerland and return back to our home base each evening.

Travel by narrow gauge train through the middle of a mountain to explore the heights of the tallest peak in Europe, the Jungfraujoch. Experience the thrill of making your way through an ice palace and out onto an enormous glacier. Then travel by cable car to reach another peak, the Schilthorn made famous by the James Bond film On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, where we will dine in a 360-degree revolving restaurant. Feel the sheer power of water while exploring glacial gorges and an entire waterfall inside a mountain.

We will explore small villages, some of which are car-free and only accessible via funicular, train, or cable car. Experience clean glacial aqua-colored water and visits to lakeside towns and picturesque medieval castles, like in the small town of Spiez. In Switzerland’s capital Bern, a UNESCO world heritage site, marvel at the Zytglogge (clock tower) built in the 13th century and endowed with the famous Swiss precision still performing on the hour including mechanical figures such as a parade of bears, a jester, and a golden rooster. Step inside Albert Einstein’s home and learn how he lived as he developed his Theory of Relativity here in 1905.

Dive into the cultural history of Switzerland with an immersive visit to an expansive open-air museum in Ballenberg housing over 100 historical homes and agricultural buildings from all over Switzerland. How about a stop in the town of Meiringen famous for perfecting meringues and interesting ties to Sherlock Holmes?

Interlaken is just down the road and we will visit the town and make our way up the other side to an amazing viewpoint where we will see firsthand how the town got its name—between the lakes. You will be able to see both Lake Brienz and Lake Thun with Interlaken saddled between them.

If you fancy a bit of adventure, we’ve got you covered. Outside Grindelwald, we will offer you the opportunity to ride a rodelbahn (a summer toboggan run) and walk across a spiderweb of ropes suspended high over a glacial gorge. It might sound rather scary, but really it’s lots of fun!

We haven’t forgotten you, shoppers. You’ll have time to explore many shops to find the perfect memoir -- maybe a Swiss Army knife or your own Swiss timepiece. The chocolatiers will also be waiting with every indulgence to satisfy your sweet tooth.

We’ve traveled to this area time and time again for 30+ years and we cannot wait to share our deep love for the Berner Oberland!
